Trying out a viral TikTok recipe

Blaise Doubman

I talk about social media viral recipes a lot in my blog posts and column pieces, and it always amazes me how many people know exactly what I am talking about but yet have never actually made the recipe themselves. They have just shared it or retweeted it or whatever. I can understand sharing a recipe because you want to make it later, sort of like a bookmark if you will, but how does one get a recipe to go viral? Much like the Buffalo chicken dip I wrote about a couple of weeks ago. It is about like catching lightning in a bottle.

This recipe started on TikTok. There are many discussions, both good and bad, about where this recipe originated from. Nobody really knows. Much like all recipes, someone thinks they have invented something when in reality, someone somewhere, has been making it for years and years. So many viral recipe posts are actually flops. Only popular because the picture or doctored video makes it look appealing. I will say though that this recipe is different. The final product is absolutely delicious! I can not wait to experiment and try it with a dusting of cinnamon sugar on top or even a chocolate drizzle. Try this out and let me know what you think!

TikTok Crinkle Cake

1 package phyllo dough defrosted

2 sticks salted butter melted

1 cup whole milk

2 large eggs

2 cups white granulated sugar, divided

2 tsp pure vanilla extract

1/2 cup water

Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F.

Spray a 9×13-inch baking pan with non-stick spray containing flour.

Take two sheets of the phyllo dough and carefully and gently fold them up long ways creating a long crinkle. Place that inside the prepared pan and continue that process until the pan is filled from side to side with the folded up phyllo dough. Look at my photograph to get an idea in which direction you should be working.

Bake, in preheated oven for 10 minutes.

Remove and pour over the melted salted butter. Place back into the preheated oven and bake for another 10 minutes.

While the cake is baking for the second time, combine the whole milk, large eggs, 1 cup of the white granulated sugar and the vanilla extract.

After finished baking for the second time, remove and pour the milk mixture evenly over the top. Place back into preheated oven and bake another 40 minutes.

In the meantime, combine the remaining 1 cup white granulated sugar with ½ cup water in a medium sized saucepan over medium heat until thickened into a syrup.

Once the cake has baked, remove from oven and pour on the syrup.

Allow to cool completely before enjoying.
