Deep Fried Twinkies

My Grandma Deloris would always say that I had “sweet teeth” and not just a “sweet tooth”. Over the years, I have not only found that to be true but also embraced it as just another part of the person I am today. I love desserts of all kinds. Pies, cookies, cakes, brownies, on and on. My personal favorite is eating dessert first, followed by the meal and then a second round of dessert. Hence, the title of my first cookbook as well as my motto in life. Really it is true. Some people, go through life with a little reward for themselves. You can be one of those people! Some people take trips, others collect handbags or other fashion pieces but some people give themselves the pleasure of really delicious food. There is a saying that some people eat to live while others live to eat. I am in the business of living to eat for sure!

I remember very first trying the recipe I am sharing with you here all today. It blew my mind how deliciously simple, yet complex, something like a deep fried Twinkie could be! I was literally amazed. Eat a Twinkie and you are not really in for that much of an experience honestly. There is not much flavor, the texture really is not anything to brag about and the filling can seem, sort of, flat. But something magical takes place when you deep fry one! The outside gets golden and crisp and develops so much flavor, while the inside cream turns almost into a sugary pudding. Top these with chocolate syrup or strawberry syrup and dust with powdered sugar and you have heaven in your hands!

Deep Fried Twinkies

6 Hostess “Twinkies”
Vegetable Oil

1 cup whole white milk
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup white all-purpose flour plus 2 tablespoons
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

White all-purpose flour, for dusting and rolling

Start by freezing your Twinkies for at least 2 hours.

When ready, heat the vegetable oil in a large pot on the stove (or your deep fryer) to 375 degrees F.

In a large bowl mix together the whole white milk, white vinegar, vegetable oil, white all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt.

Dust and roll Twinkies in the white all-purpose flour before dipping them completely into the batter.

Gently shake a little of the batter off the Twinkies before adding them to the preheated oil.

Allow them to fry for about four minutes.

Remove from the fryer and drain on paper towels.

Serve dusted with powdered sugar, chocolate syrup, fruit, or a combination.

Serve warm.

Enjoy!
